Counselling is used in a variety of different ways to assist the professional development of employees, from helping to enhance abilities and achieve potential, to solving difficult lifestyle problems that are obstructing your progress. While counselling at work is often related to poor performance or disciplinary issues, there are many ways in which it can improve an employee’s work ethic, professionalism and workplace conduct.

We all go through rough times, whether it’s at work or at home, so it’s not always difficult to identify the reasons behind a falling level of performance in the working environment. Counselling is more than capable of assisting your professional development, by putting things right and sorting out problems, before they start contributing to a decline in your performance. There may be times when an employer recommends counselling, although you are entitled to pursue it yourself.

Some of the most common reasons for taking up counselling in the workplace are for disciplinary issues, stress, personal issues, addiction and depression. You can also pursue counselling from skilled and experienced professionals, who are aware of what it takes to be successful as an employee or as a business.

Good employers will always recommend counselling if necessary. In truth, it’s all part of a productive health and safety regime within the workplace, and there are some larger organisations that possess full-scale occupational health departments. There are various different types of counselling that look to assist professional development, including addiction help, stress counselling, relaxation classes and various employee assistance programs, which are designed to further enhance the skills and abilities of an employee.

Counselling provides employees with the platform they need to overcome anything that might be restricting them from achieving their full potential in the workplace. This could be anything from standing up in front of large crowds to deliver a speech, to gaining a positive mindset that improves determination and a will to achieve.

For example, without certain business traits, company representatives will struggle to attract clients, subsequently resulting in a noticeable lack of revenue for the business. For this reason, employees may look to adopt an entirely new mindset or character that fits the demands of their occupation. This is one of many reasons why counselling plays a huge part in professional development.

Depression is something that can’t be ignored, and is more than capable of disrupting professional development. Depression is an illness that requires treatment; therefore all employers should look out for employees who are struggling with depression. Counselling is perfectly suited to those who have depression, and who are determined to keep their professional development on the right track nonetheless.

Stress is another reason why professional development is slowed, and it’s a particularly common problem. In most cases, employers have a duty to look after their employees when they are experiencing stress-related issues. What they are likely to do is provide counselling options that focus on dealing with stress, should the problem escalate. Either way, it’s advised that you pursue independent counselling services to try and deal with stress, so it doesn't get in the way of your professional aspirations.

Disciplinary counselling is usually only needed once, and is used to address a gradual decrease in standards due to behavioral or performance related issues. The idea of this type of counselling is to identify what it is that is causing the problems, so that it can be worked out and dealt with. If you are regularly absent from work for instance, you will need to identify why this is, as this is likely to be the cause for your drop in work performance. By taking up disciplinary counselling, you can bring an end to poor performance before facing disciplinary action from the company.
