Pet Peeve about People Watching Me Eat

People commenting on my food tick me off

People commenting on my food tick me off

Here is one thing that annoys me and stresses me out frequently. Why do some people feel compelled to comment on the things I eat? I do not take a lunch break at work so I have to sit at my desk and eat. People that come in or walk by always like to comment on what my food is, how it smells, and if they think they would enjoy it. I wish I had control over this situation because if I did, I would not eat where people can ridicule me.

Another time someone did this was at a sushi restaurant. My friend brought a friend who does not eat sushi. She promptly sat next to me and commented through the whole meal on how gross she thought my food looked, and pondered freely and loudly on how it was that I could each such things. I found this to be insulting, rude, and disrespectful.

What I decided to do, though, was to be lighthearted about it, to curb my anger and frustration and laugh along with her. This way I did not make her feel uncomfortable. However, I sacrificed my own feelings in order to spare hers.

How do you think we can keep people from annoying us? We cannot. We have to change the way we react to people. That is the only thing we have control over.

That was quite rude to disrespectfully comment on your food while you were eating in the restaurant. And you have definitely reacted to it in a mature fashion, when you decided to let it slide and not get worked up over her comments.

You said it best when you say "We have to change the way we react to people. That is the only thing we have control over". That's pretty much what stress is all about - it is our reaction to events that happen around us, and not those events themselves.

So by practicing to control those reactions arising out of other people's words or actions, can we get on the path to beat stress in the long run.

Good work, April, and Thanks for sharing.
