Senior citizens can improve memory by staying positive
Maintaining positive attitude about aging may help senior citizens have an improved memory, than otherwise - a study from North Carolina State University suggests.
Senior citizens who did not believe that memory is influenced by aging, performed better on memory tests, compared to those who believed that memory deteriorates with age.
When senior citizens perceived they were supposed to perform poorly on a particular type of memory test, they had lower scores. For instance, if they were told that older folks do poorly on a particular test, they performed more poorly on that memory test.
However, simply remaining confident that memory does not decline with age, seems to keep seniors mentally sharp.
The study also showed that senior citizens with the highest education suffered the most from such stereotyping.
So looks like being positive comes with an added advantage, especially for seniors.
