New online course supports future teachers’ skills with the use of mobile devices in the classroom

Qualcomm® Wireless Reach™’s support for an innovative approach to showing prospective teachers how to integrate mobile devices into their classrooms helps extend the online classroom, enriching and enhancing the educational experience.

Over the past 10 years, K-12 school leaders have stepped up their efforts towards digital transformation, leveraging mobile devices such as tablets, laptops, and Chromebooks to support learning. learning and student achievement in the classroom. The sudden shift to remote and blended learning at the start of the pandemic forced educators to restructure their learning plans, and quickly, toward mobile-friendly plans. using mobile devices. In fact, 9 in 10 school leaders say their students now use school-owned devices to support learning at school and at home (also known as the 1:1 program), compared to just 41% in during the 2018-2019 school year.

However, the impact of 1:1 programs is only fully realized when teachers know how to take advantage of these devices in their teaching. School and district leaders are also making new demands on their local colleges and universities to ensure the next generation of teachers master mobile learning strategies. Principals want trainee teachers to be trained in the effective use of devices in their lessons, so they are ready for one-on-one learning on their first day in their own classroom.

For the past five years, Qualcomm Wireless Reach has supported an innovative program at the University of Kentucky College of Education to help future teachers master the use of mobile devices.

Designed by Project Tomorrow and funded by Wireless Reach, the 6-hour online course focuses on connecting what future teachers are learning about good teaching with the value proposition for students’ use of mobile devices in the K-12 at school and at home. Using videos of real teachers in their classroom, the course helps students understand how tablets, laptops and Chromebooks are helping young learners develop collaborative and creative skills. The videos explain how student access to devices can alter the classroom experience to meet individual student needs.

Additionally, college professors have integrated tablets and Chromebooks into their teaching, modeling best practices for their students. Classroom teachers from local school districts gave these aspiring teachers the opportunity to learn effective classroom management and student engagement strategies. As part of the course, student teachers develop a comprehensive lesson plan that incorporates mobile devices, engaging learning apps, and high-impact student engagement and teaching strategies. This lesson plan development gives these future teachers a head start in preparing for success in their future classroom.

Based on first-year feedback, pre-service teachers were impressed with the modules that link the effective use of devices to differentiate learning and provide students with deeper ways to interact with content. Additionally, 82% of students said they wanted to use the online course to further their learning of mobile devices.

The self-paced course design offers prospective teachers an effective way to learn classroom strategies and watch self-paced videos to better understand new practices. The University of Kentucky faculty is incorporating the course into its curriculum for the 2021-2022 academic year, based on its students’ growing interest in mobile learning in the classroom. Plans also include providing teacher candidates from other colleges and universities with access to the online course.

Together, Wireless Reach, Project Tomorrow, and the University of Kentucky are working to meet the need for teacher candidates who are proficient with mobile devices in the classroom.
